Dally in the Alley 2008 to feature Russell Industreal Artists
As part of this year's Local Art Gallery, 2008 Dally in the Alley is showcasing a good handful of artists that reside and work at the historic Russell Industrial Center. In response to last year's 2007 MOCAD featurette, this year the Dally in the Alley decides to feature the artists of the Russell Industrial Center with the curatorial aid of the renowned local artist and official Dally artist alumni
Mark Arminski.
The Russell Industrial Complex was built in the 1915 by German architect Albert Kahn. Known as the "architect of Detroit," Kahn is responsible for the designs of Detroit's Packard Plant, River Rouge Plant, Fisher Building, Belle Isle Aquarium and Conservatory, Kales Building, and the General Motors Building (now Cadillac Place in New Center). The Russell stands as a monument to the "grand days" of Detroit when the city was instrumental to the development of the automobile, the assembly line, and the Arsenal of Democracy (with the development of Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant during World War II). The Russell Industrial Complex consists of seven buildings and is located off the I-75 service drive and Clay Ave. Over the years, Russell Industrial transformed from a home to industrial development to a home for artistic endeavors. There are currently over 80 artists of all styles and techniques that reside and have studios in the complex. The Russell offers the artists work space to develop, refine, produce, and sell their craft.
Mark Arminski's bio (taken from: www.arminski.com)
Mark Arminski's appreciation for the arts began at an early age when his mother would take him to the Detroit Institute of Arts on Saturday afternoons. There he was first exposed to great art in its many forms. Possibly because of these memorable trips with his mother, Arminski began to focus on producing his own art in elementary school. By high school, he excelled in the arts. Furthering his arts education, he attended the College for Creative Studies, in addition to courses at other local and national art institutions.
But it was during the 1980's that Mark found his true voice. He began working with various printmaking and photo techniques and incorporated them in his work with utilizing the human form. By the 1990's, he was designing and printing posters for emerging national and local bands, which were influenced by his love of drawing and painting.
Since then, Mark has worked on art constantly and was commissioned to produce CD covers, concert posters, paintings, fine art prints, drawings, murals and even commercials. His unique style and designs have been viewed worldwide. Due to his diversity, Arminski never knows what direction his art will take him!

The Curating Process:
The Dally Local Gallery will be curated by Antonio “Shades” Agee. The judging process will begin after the submission process ends and will be judged by Agee, as well as the two official Dally ’08 artists, Donald Calloway and U. Newkirk, II. While the judging process occurs, the Dally will provide musical entertainment throughout the night.
Key curator, Antonio "Shades" Agee has been a Detroiter since birth, not only that he has been an active artist and community member of the Cass Corridor. With a Father who was a Jazz musician, listening to acts from Nat "King" Cole to Frank Sinatra, Agee was exposed to the arts at a young age. He initially started painting the streets when “graffiti” was not even a house hold name, no where to be found in the city. Through the love of the art, Agee traveled around the country and world to learn and hone his skills, while learning to produce graffiti by commission and "legal" contracts.
Starting from the early 1990’s, “Shades” Agee created an extensive resume for himself leading up to the present day. "Shades" has racked up a vast catalogue of impressive work by involving himself in custom murals for movies and canvases for the likes of Chrysler, Ford, and Universal Studios. “Shades” has two pieces showcased at the Detroit Institute of Arts and have exhibited at C-Pop Gallery, Motor Gallery, and others.
“Shades” has a dedicated clientele that collects his works on almost anything he puts his hands on including: purses, dresses, dolls, etc. In addition, Ovation T.V. requested Agee to perform live demonstrations in a tour of three major cities. With a substantial background history in the “streets” and honorable up-bringing, “Shades” has established himself as one of the Original Graff artist in the city of Detroit!!
The submission process will start at 11am August 30, 2008, and all entries will not be accepted after 9pm. We look forward to seeing all the artists there!
Location: ELEMENTS, 2125 Michigan Ave., Detroit, MI 48216

The Greenest festival in Detroit
Recycle Detroit, Waste One, and Great Lakes Recycling are working together with the North Cass Community Union to green the Cass Corridor during the Dally in the Alley 2008. The collaboration’s goal is to divert 50% of the waste stream by collecting: Plastic #1-7, aluminum cans, paper, and cardboard. This “Green Trio” were responsible for making this year’s Movement: Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival 2008 a “green event.” Volunteers from Recycle Detroit were able to capture 3,000 pounds of recyclables from the festival’s waste stream. A team of Recycle Detroit’s volunteers also participated at this year’s Michigan’s Rothbury Music Festival. Recycle Detroit’s collaboration with Spitfire Agency was successful with diverting 75% of the Rothbury’s waste stream. This will be Recycle Detroit’s third year participating with Dally in the Alley and its green initiatives. Recycle Detroit will take the initiative to make the Dally in the Alley 2008 the “cleanest festival in the city.” This project will require over 100+ volunteers and will need the cooperation of the community in order to be successful. Recycle Detroit’s goal is to divert at least 50% of the waste into recyclables. There will be recycling stations set up through out the festival, which Recycle Detroit will have two bins collecting recyclables and waste separately.
